VREDESTEIN/SOILMEC JEC SALOON CHALLENGE

18 of the 19 drivers made qualifying for the first Saloon race of the season.

Andrew Jeffery spotted many cars including Jaguars failing the noise test. Unfortunately this test is carried out just as you enter the collecting area, with no time to do anything about it!

Mike Cann in his bright red MK2 secured pole 1.3 seconds faster than second placed Richard Dorlin in the white XJ6. Chris Palmer was 6th in the invitation class as his car does not currently meet the requirements of the series. Philip Woods now in his second season with the Saloons was the fastest in Class A, with Neil Taylor fastest in E.

RACE 2

Things didn't go quite as well in race 2 for Mike Cann. He lost three places on the first lap and then over cooked it trying to catch up with Simon Lewis & Richard Dorlin! The spin at Russell's did not help the cause, and Mike only managed to recover to 3rd by the end of the race!

Richard Dorlin leads race 2

.

Mike Cann desperately try to make up time, looses it at Russells!

Dave Bye had a brilliant first lap, making up 9 places, and then gradually making his way up to 4th place! Howard Kirkham did a bit of off roading but still managed to finish in 5th, whils't further back down the grid new driver Colin Mckay had a good battle with Stephen Bantleman and eventualy made it stick!

Pic1 Dave Bye swiftly making his way up the grid. Pic2 Stephen Bantleman & Colin McKay had a good race.

Howard Kirkham fails to negotiate the bend!

Pic1 Howard Kirkham & Chris palmer. Pic2 Ken Angel & Philip Woods.

As usual there was plenty of close racing at both ends of the grid, Philip Woods spent the whole race looking for an opertunity to pass Ken Angel, but had to settle for 10th, just over a second behind Philip.

Review of Brands Hatch race coming soon!

My first drive at the Norfolk race track. We arrived in the camper at about 9pm Friday evening. As usual I had been working on the car all week until 8 or 9 in the evening, and all day Friday! It was as ready as it was going to be! It was absolutely freezing, and no electric hookup! We were not happy bunnies!!!!!

Everything always seems better in the morning, and Hypothermia was beginning decline. There were strict instructions not to sign on early, which I foolishly obeyed

P

, only to have to abandon the Queue and present myself for the new drivers briefing. Kevin Doyle kindly looked after my License and my place in the Queue but was long gone by the time I returned. I presumed that He had left it at the counter, but they insisted it wasn't there! I then did a few practice laps of the Paddock trying to find Kevin. When I eventually did find Him, He told me that He had left it at the signing in desk. My immediate thoughts were oh what a shame but never mind!

On my return to the desk they did of course have my license! By now the last of the XJS's had gone through scrutineering, and I had to push my way to the front of the long queue, if I was going to make it to the practice. Please please please don't find anything wrong with the car? It was OK! Phew!!! Surely things can only improve?

Being a great believer in the magical qualities of Shell Optimax we decided to go in search of some fuel, having failed to obtain any the previous day. To cut a long story short there isn't any within the vicinity of Snetterton. Failed! Plan B, look at the circuit guide and head for the nearest fuel station to the circuit. No sign of it? I then asked in a motorcycle showroom and they enlightened me that this station closed down 5 years ago! 20 mile round trip, still no fuel (I have been known to exaggerate on occasions). Fortunately they do sell fuel at the track, which was about 10 yards from where I started my fruitless search! Morale of the story is don't assume anything and be prepared!
